Eggs are a great option for breakfast. While they're extremely versatile as you can decide between boiling, frying, scrambling, and poaching them for your meal, they can be time consuming to cook, especially if you're choosing a more complicated cooking method. However, one woman now claims to have found a faster way to poach an egg and it doesn't even require a hob to recreate.

Food enthusiast Elise Brulotte has amassed an remarkable online audience of 459,200 followers while posting clips showcasing her go-to recipes and cooking hacks. In one particular video, Elise shared her go-to method for busy moments, as it allows her to enjoy freshly poached eggs in less than two minutes.

"The random life hack that I learned and never stopped doing is microwaved poached eggs. I am always in a rush, I never have to do anything. And this hack literally saved me," she said at the start of the TikTok video.

With a mug positioned on the kitchen counter in front of her, she went on to demonstrate to her 3.8 million viewers how they could replicate the method themselves - and all they'd need is a mug and microwave.

"So you just microwave a quarter cup of water for a minute and then crack an egg in there directly from the fridge," she explained she went on to crack an egg into the mug with warm water.

She continued by clarifying you should delicately pierce the egg yolk with a cocktail stick, while being cautious not to puncture it completely so it breaks.

"And then you're gonna cover it and microwave it for another 30 seconds," she said before the video cut to when her egg was finished poaching in the microwave. However, it's worth noting that timing can differ between appliances. Various users have reported requiring between 36 and 45 seconds to reach their preferred texture.

"And then you're just gonna dump it onto a paper towel, and look how cute she is," she said, admiring her poached egg before slicing it open to reveal the perfectly runny yolk.

"I'm gonna eat this with some sourdough toast, but it's cooking, but look at that," she said as she showed off her poached egg for viewers.

"It's actually perfect, it took two minutes," she stated.

However, viewers swiftly flooded the comments section to challenge Elise about her unconventional cooking technique.

One viewer enquired why she pierced the yolk before cooking it, to which another user responded: "So it doesn't explode."

"Poached eggs the normal way take no time at all what u talking about!" another person said, while a third person wrote: "Worked fine until it didn't. Don't do it unless you want to spend an hour cleaning exploded egg from the microwave."

Dangers of microwaving an egg

While the viewers were right to say microwaving an egg could be dangerous, there are safe ways to do it.

The reason it can be dangerous to microwave an egg is because the water inside heats rapidly, turning to steam and building extreme internal pressure that causes them to explode, creating a huge, hot mess and burn hazard, even after removing them from the microwave.

To safely microwave eggs, you must break them into a dish, whisk them (like scrambled eggs), or pierce the yolk to vent steam, allowing moisture to escape slowly. So by following Elise's instructions, your egg should cook nicely in the microwave thanks to piercing the yolk beforehand.
