Google Gmail: Today, a Gmail account isn't just about reading and sending emails; it's become the key to our entire digital life.
Today, a Gmail account isn't just about reading and sending emails; it's become the key to our entire digital life. Banking, social media, cloud storage, and personal photos are all connected to this account in some way. Therefore, if a password is leaked, the damage could be significant. This is why relying solely on a password is no longer sufficient. Using a tool like Google Authenticator for better security is a wise move.
People typically enable two-step verification on their accounts and rely on OTPs sent to their mobile numbers for login. However, sometimes, through tactics like SIM swaps or phone hacking, criminals gain access to the OTPs. Google Authenticator works differently here. This app generates a new security code on your phone every 30 seconds.
Whenever you log in to your Gmail account, you'll need to enter the latest code displayed in the app after entering your password. Even if someone learns your password, they won't be able to access your account without this code. The app works even without internet, ensuring security even when the network is out.
Setting it up isn't too difficult. First, download Google Authenticator to your smartphone. Then, open your Google Account settings in your browser and enable the 2-Step Verification option. Selecting the Authenticator app will display a QR code. Scanning this code with the app installed on your phone will link your account. Afterward, you'll need to enter the code generated in the app at every login.
Google also provides backup codes during setup. These should be noted down in a safe place, as they can help with account recovery if you lose your phone or lose access to the app.
Remember not to share the code you see in Authenticator with anyone. Enable 2-Step Verification on all your important Gmail accounts, and make the Authenticator app your preferred choice over OTP. With this added layer of security, your account will remain secure even if your password is stolen.
