Nestled amidst the stunning landscapes of Northern Ireland, this coastal village has a profound link to a tale we all cherish.

Adding to its serene charm, the Kilbroney River meanders through Rostrevor, a village adored byliterature enthusiasts and locals alike for its awe-inspiring scenery.

This stretch of the river is fondly known as Fairy Glen, owing to local folklore which claims fairies live on the riverbanks, lending an extra layer of mystique to this already magical village.

Narnia

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, published in 1950, transported readers to the enchanting world of Narnia, captivating audiences for generations through both literature and film.

This fantastical realm, conceived by author C.S. Lewis, was actually inspired by the sights he encountered during his visits to Rostrevor.

It's thought that the vistas of the Mourne Mountains across Carlingford Lough particularly sparked his "idea of Narnia". In tribute to this, the village proudly features a Narnia Trail, showcasing many local landmarks.

A family-friendly loop dedicated to the story takes you through Kilbroney Park in Rostrevor. Much like Narnia itself, the trail begins with stepping through a 'wardrobe door', leading you into a land inhabited by a variety of unique creatures.

Wooden carved sculptures depicting characters from the story, including Aslan and the White Witch, are dotted along the trail. Families can explore it entirely free of charge, starting from the Holly Lane car park.

Further tributes to the writer include a commemorative bench celebrating his work and the time he spent admiring Rostrevor. The memorial within Kilbroney Park sits in an ideal position, offering sweeping views of the area and the stunning mountains encircling it.

It was reportedly at this very spot that the author remarked in a letter to his brother: "That part of Rostrevor which overlooks Carlingford Lough is my idea of Narnia."

Mountain Biking

Beyond its breathtaking Irish vistas, the village has become a magnet for keen cyclists drawn to the Rostrevor Mountain Bike Trails. It's a paradise for bikers, boasting some of the most "exhilarating mountain biking in all of Ireland", comprising multiple trails.

The most challenging is the 30km red trail, featuring numerous thrilling descents and an extensive section stretching from the north shore across to Yellow Water.

Alternative routes include a 20km journey ascending to Slievemartin's summit and around Slievebane, before plunging into the heart of Rostrevor Forest.

One recent cyclist enthused about their adrenaline-fuelled visit, stating: "Absolutely fantastic MTB trails here at Rostrevor! I've been a few times now, and each time I've enjoyed it more than the last!".

The village centre serves as a genuine foodie paradise, boasting numerous restaurants, cafés and pubs where diners are truly spoilt for choice.

According to TripAdvisor, The Old Schoolhouse claims the top spot for dining in the area, dishing up delicious traditional café fare, sweet treats and hot beverages.

One satisfied diner recently praised their "5-star" visit, writing: "We had a fab evening. The food is first class, and the staff are amazing, so attentive and friendly. Couldn't say enough about it. Would definitely recommend this to anyone visiting Rostrevor. Will be back."

Housed in an 18th-century building, the Rostrevor Inn offers a lively atmosphere and authentic Irish bar experience. Both locals and visitors flock here for the regular live music events throughout the week, perfect for an evening boost.

But the culinary delights don't end there - other Rostrevor favourites worth exploring include The Church, The Kilbroney Bar and Restaurant, and The Garden Room. With Church Street and Bridge Street forming the heart of the village, venture down there and you're guaranteed to discover something that tickles your fancy.
