AIBE: Millions of students in India, dreaming of becoming lawyers, complete their law studies every year. However, few realize that simply obtaining an LLB degree is not a prerequisite for practicing law. After graduating from law school, you must pass the All India Bar Examination (AIBE). Until you clear this exam, the Bar Council of India will not issue you a license to practice law. Simply put, an LLB grants you a degree, but the AIBE recognizes you as a true lawyer.
Examination to Begin Legal Practice
The Bar Council of India conducts the AIBE exam every year. After passing this exam, candidates are issued a Certificate of Practice (COP). Only then can you register with your state's Bar Council and obtain a license to practice in court. Until you possess this certificate, you are considered merely a law graduate.
When is the exam held, and who can take it?
The AIBE 2026 exam date has been finalized, and this time it will be held on June 7, 2026. The application process for this exam, conducted by the Bar Council of India, began in February, and interested candidates can register within the stipulated deadline. Appearing for this exam will be mandatory for law graduates who wish to begin practicing law this year. Candidates will be issued a Certificate of Practice only after passing the exam. Final-year law students can also appear for this exam. Anyone of any age can take this exam.
What is the exam pattern?
The AIBE exam consists of a total of 100 objective-type questions. Each question carries one mark, and there is no negative marking. The exam time is 3 hours and 30 minutes. It is an open-book exam, meaning you can carry your bare act with you. In this, questions are asked from a total of 19 subjects like Constitutional Law, Indian Penal Code, Civil Procedure Code, Evidence Act, Family Law, Cyber Law, and Contract Law.
