Google’s AI research lab, DeepMind, has announced a partnership with the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), India’s apex research body, to roll out its science-centric AI models for training students and researchers.
In a statement, Google Deepmind said that it will also offer large language models (LLMs) like AlphaGenome, AI Co-scientist and Earth AI, for hackathons and community contests.
It is pertinent to note that AlphaGenome is an AI model that helps researchers analyse the landscape of the human genome, while the AI Co-scientist is a multi-agent AI system that acts as a virtual scientific collaborator. Earth AI comprises a collection of models that enables environmental monitoring and disaster response.
The collaboration is part of Deepmind’s National Partnerships for AI programme, under which it works with countries across the globe to deploy its frontier AI models in areas aligned with national priorities. After similar engagements in the US and the UK, the company has now rolled out the initiative in India.
Besides, Deepmind will also collaborate with Atal Tinkering Labs to incorporate robotics and coding into local curricula and integrate its Gemini chatbots into teacher workflows.
In addition, the big tech major also said Google Cloud will partner with the Centre to scale the iGOT Karmayogi platform, an upskilling platform for public servants. As part of the collaboration, the initiative will look to cater to 2 Cr government employees in 18 Indian languages.
Google also announced a $30 Mn “AI for Science Impact Challenge” to offer funding and technical support for researchers using AI to drive scientific breakthroughs.
Beyond science and education, the company also claimed that multiple Indian startups and institutions are using its agricultural AI models to improve crop productivity and farmer incomes. In the energy sector, Google said that it is working with Open Climate Fix to integrate its WeatherNext AI models into India’s electricity grid.
At the ongoing India AI Impact Summit 2026, Google also touted its India-America Connect Initiative. Announced last year, the infrastructure initiative will deliver new subsea cable routes to boost AI connectivity between the US and India.
Last year, the big tech major had said thatit will invest a total of $15 Bn (around INR 1.3 Lakh Cr) in Visakhapatnam over the next five years to build its first Indian AI data centre hub. The initiative will establish a new international subsea cable landing station in the city and add three new subsea routes linking India with Singapore, South Africa and Australia.
It will also build four additional fibre-optic routes to improve capacity and resilience between the US, India and parts of the Southern Hemisphere.
