A new and dangerous cyber fraud has emerged that is targeting government employees across India, purportedly withdrawing money from their bank accounts under the pretext of informing them of their estimated salary hikes under the 8th Pay Commission (8th CPC). The central government, through a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), has alerted employees about the ongoing cyber fraud and provided information on how to avoid it.

According to a social media post on CyberdostI4C, several government employees have been sent WhatsApp messages asking them to click on an APK file link, claiming that employees will be informed of their estimated revised salaries under the 8th CPC. The 8th Pay Commission is essential for over 10 million central government employees and pensioners.

According to a CyberdostI4C social media post on X, government employees are being asked to download an APK file by clicking on a link via a WhatsApp message that purports to inform them of their estimated salary hikes under the 8th Pay Commission. As soon as the APK file is installed, access to the mobile phone goes directly to the fraudsters.

Government employees are being sent WhatsApp messages asking them to download an APK file to find out their salary after the 8th Pay Commission is implemented.

Is the bank account of government employees at risk?

According to social media posts, government employees are receiving WhatsApp messages claiming to calculate their salary under the 8th Pay Commission. Note that these messages are fake and ask users to download an APK file. Once the APK file is installed, scammers gain access to the employee's mobile phone. Money is then withdrawn from the victim's bank account.

Important advice for employees:
The government never sends APK files on WhatsApp.

Downloading APK files from unverified sources can be dangerous.
