Indian streaming platform JioHotstar announced a partnership with Sam Altman's OpenAI on Thursday at the India AI Impact Summit. As part of this move, a ChatGPT-powered voice and text assistant will be integrated directly into the JioHotstar app. According to the AI chatbot maker, the new multilingual discovery tool can help users discover content through natural language conversations. It is designed to replace traditional keyword searches and endless scrolling with contextual, personalized recommendations.

ChatGPT-JioHotstar Partnership
JioHotstar stated in a press note that at the core of this partnership is a ChatGPT-powered interface built using OpenAI APIs. While the two companies have not disclosed technical specifications, it is believed that the multilingual discovery tool will support voice interactions by combining text-generation capabilities with speech-to-text and text-to-speech APIs.

Therefore, this feature enables what JioHotstar and OpenAI call "multilingual cognitive search." It claims that users can simply speak or type their intent, including mood, situation, genre preference, or a specific scenario, and the discovery tool will instantly provide context-aware recommendations. This integration enables voice and text interactions in multiple Indian languages.

Giving an example, JioHotstar explained that users might say, "My parents are coming over, suggest something we can all watch together," or "We're twins and only watch movies about identical twins." Instead of rigid keyword matching, the AI will be able to understand nuances, cultural context, and layered prompts to show relevant titles from JioHotstar's catalog.

The streaming platform claims that the ChatGPT-powered assistant will not only recommend what users explicitly ask for, but can also predict similar content they might not have thought of, promising to take the "what to watch" dilemma away.

Beyond on-demand content, the multilingual discovery tool also extends to live sports. According to JioHotstar, users can interact with each other in real-time during live matches to learn about key moments, player highlights, scores, or context.
