In this digital age, while the government is constantly tightening regulations to curb cybercrime, fraudsters are also finding new ways to trap people. Recently, fake messages being sent in the name of the Post Office have caused concern among many people. These messages are tricking people into updating their address information.
Fraudsters claiming to be from India Post send a message stating that your parcel has arrived at the warehouse, but delivery could not be made due to an incomplete address. They provide a link and ask you to click on it within 48 hours to update your address, or the parcel will be returned.
This is where the fraud begins. As soon as a person clicks on that link, their personal information could be stolen, or money could disappear from their bank account.
The government's fact-checking agency, PIB Fact Check, has clarified that the post office does not send messages containing such links. This means that all such messages are completely fake and their sole purpose is to deceive people. Therefore, think twice before clicking on any unknown link.
The telecom regulator, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, has also implemented rules to prevent fake messages. Messages from genuine and verified senders now have unique identification marks. Messages from government departments have a distinct symbol, while messages related to banks or services can also be identified by a prescribed format. If a message does not show such identification, it is wise to treat it as suspicious.
To protect yourself, it is important not to click on any suspicious SMS, email, or WhatsApp link. Ignore calls from unknown numbers and report such cases on official platforms.
