Warning issued over 1 common bathroom item - 'harbouring bacteria'

Brits have been warned about one common bathroom item that could be damaging their children's health. Soma Pillay, bathroom specialist at online bathroom specialist Bathroom City, has explained how often bathroom areas and accessories should be cleaned.

She said: "Bathrooms are exposed to constant humidity, temperature changes and daily use. Establishing a simple, consistent cleaning schedule helps prevent long-term damage, reduces bacteria build-up and keeps surfaces looking newer for longer. Often, light but regular maintenance is far more effective than occasional deep cleans." One of the things she warned Brits about is children's bath toys. She said: "Children's bath toys are constantly exposed to warm water and can easily trap moisture inside, creating the perfect conditions for mould and mildew to develop. Although they're used in soapy water, they don't clean themselves during bath time. They should be cleaned once a week by soaking them in a solution of equal parts warm water and vinegar for around an hour. For a deeper clean, a mild bleach solution can be used where appropriate.

"Rinsing thoroughly and allowing the toys to air dry completely, ideally with the extractor fan running, helps prevent moisture from lingering inside."

This mould and bacteria can lead to respiratory issues, infections, or skin irritations in children. If you don't want to clean the toys so regularly, you could seal the opening with a glue gun.

Soma said other bathroom items also need attention. She said that loofahs and body sponges need to be rinsed and replaced regularly.

"Loofahs and body sponges collect dead skin cells and remain damp between uses, which makes them a breeding ground for bacteria and mould. They should be rinsed thoroughly after every wash and allowed to dry fully in a well-ventilated area," she said.

"For hygiene reasons, natural loofahs should be replaced every three to four weeks. Synthetic versions tend to last longer but should still be replaced every two months. Periodically soaking them in a diluted disinfecting solution also helps reduce microbial build-up."

She also pointed to hairbrushes and toothbrushes. She said: "Hairbrushes gather more than just loose strands of hair. They also collect oils, styling product residue and dust. Cleaning them once a week in warm, soapy water helps remove debris and keeps them hygienic.

"Toothbrushes require even more regular attention. They should be rinsed thoroughly with hot water after each use and stored upright to dry. Replacing a toothbrush every three months, or sooner if the bristles become worn, ensures it remains effective and hygienic."

"Ultimately, consistency is what keeps a bathroom feeling fresh and hygienic. By understanding how often each essential needs attention, homeowners can maintain a space that feels clean, comfortable and well cared for throughout the year."
