Team GB star says 'I need to get a real job' as live BBC interview interrupted

Team GB bobsleigh star Greg Cackett admitted "I need to get a real job" as he turned down the prospect of competing at the next Winter Olympics in four years' time. His four-man crew finished seventh, with Germany taking gold, as Cackett drew a close to his Olympic career.

He was competing alongside Brad Hall, Lawrence Taylor and Leon Greenwood, but the team had a mountain to climb to reach the podium after the initial heats. On Saturday, they placed third as Hall piloted them to third, but lost pace in their next run and entered the podium-deciding heats 0.23 seconds off bronze, finishing away from the top three.

Team GB have not won a bobsleigh medal since Sochi 2012, where the four-man team took bronze, and Cackett firmly believes that he won't be back in the French Alps in 2030.

Cackett, 36, also competed in the 2018 Games, but when Hall hinted that his team-mate's Olympic career may be over in a live interview with the BBC, Cackett categorically agreed.

"For us it's a lot of nothing over the next month or so," Hall said when asked about the team's immediate future. "We usually have a long period to decompress. Training usually starts in the beginning of May, but maybe a little bit earlier this year.

"Greg may be done after this, maybe another year, and then..."

At this point, Cackett stepped in with a puzzled look on his face and said: "I'll be 40 in 2030, no way, you must be joking. I need a real job."

The 35-year-old Hall also admitted he was unsure about his own future, despite an Alps track that he favours, before the interview was interrupted further when gold medal winner Johannes Lochner kissed Hall on the cheek while Cackett praised the National Lottery for their support.

"We're best mates, I was groomsman at his wedding so always very supportive of him and I am very happy he's come home with two golds."

Hall also added, of the result: "It's very difficult to put into words to be honest. It's pretty devastating to finish where we did today but we weren't in the place we wanted to be overnight and we said we were going to come out fighting and do the best we can - and that's what we feel like we did.

"It didn't work out the way we wanted it to but we have so much to be proud of over the past four years - World Championships medals, European champions and World Cup medals as well so, it's just sucks to end a four-year Olympic period with a result like this but it's difficult to put into words right now."
