Ichikawa (Japan): A six-month-old macaque named Punch has become the centre of attention at Ichikawa City Zoo, drawing large crowds after videos of him went viral on social media.

Punch was reportedly rejected by his mother shortly after birth in July 2025. Zoo officials indicated that inexperience or seasonal heat stress may have contributed to the mother’s behaviour. In natural settings, infant monkeys depend heavily on maternal bonding for warmth, protection and emotional development.

Caretakers initially tried offering Punch towels for comfort, but he formed a strong attachment to a plush orangutan toy. The toy, which has long hair and easy-to-grip features, was selected in the hope that its resemblance to another primate might ease his eventual reintegration into the troop. The stuffed companion has since become a constant presence, often seen clutched in his arms as he moves around the enclosure.

Visitors gather to see Punch

On Friday, more than 100 visitors gathered at the zoo to catch a glimpse of the young macaque. Many were seen taking photographs as Punch cautiously approached other monkeys in the enclosure. Some visitors said they had travelled specifically to see him after following his story online.

Sayaka Takimoto, 32, said she rarely visits zoos but decided to come after learning about Punch. Vincent Jolly, a reporter with the French newspaper Le Figaro, also visited the zoo and shared footage of the growing crowds on Instagram.

Another visitor told AFP that Punch’s rapid growth was both heartwarming and emotional to witness, adding that it was reassuring to see him beginning to interact with other monkeys.

Gradual integration into the troop

Zoo authorities stated that Punch has recently begun adjusting better to group life. Though he has occasionally been scolded or pushed away by other monkeys, no serious aggression has been reported. In several videos, he can be seen attempting to engage with the troop before returning briefly to his toy for reassurance.

In one clip, an adult monkey is seen embracing Punch, while another shows him being groomed. Among primates, grooming plays an essential role in strengthening bonds, building trust and maintaining social order within the group.

In a statement, the zoo requested visitors to encourage Punch’s efforts to socialise, noting his resilience despite occasional reprimands from other monkeys.

Online response

Social media users have widely shared Punch’s story, expressing sympathy and admiration. Several commenters highlighted the contrast between his early rejection and the affection he now receives from around the world. Others noted his visible attachment to the toy, interpreting it as a sign of his search for comfort and security.

With growing public interest, Punch has not only become an internet favourite but has also significantly increased visitor numbers at the zoo, as people continue to follow his progress toward full integration with his troop.
