Few things are more quintessentially British than a crisp sandwich. When you're in need of a quick, tasty bite, nothing surpasses the sublime pairing of bread and your favourite crisp flavour - along with any additional ingredients you fancy.

It may seem like an unlikely combination, and it might not be the healthiest option on the menu, but when it tastes this good, who's complaining? And that's without even mentioning the delightfully satisfying crunch as you take a bite. An American woman recently sampled this classic British snack for the first time and shared her thoughts on social media - but her approach left Brits rather taken aback.

The woman, known as carfoodreview_uk on social media, shared the video on TikTok, where she boasts more than 26,000 followers. Sat in her car clutching a packet of Walkers Cheese and Onion crisps and two slices of bread, she said: "I truly don't know if this is a prank or not, but I am willing to try anything that you suggest. I hate to say it, I really do, but I feel like I'm being punked."

Holding a tub of Flora margarine, she continues: "I was told to use butter but all I have is Flora in the house, so hopefully that's ok." Then comes the contentious part - the woman reveals the two slices of bread have been toasted, revealing the margarine melting into them, reports the Mirror.

Opening the packet of crisps and tipping a hefty portion onto one of the slices, she continues: "Again, I don't - do you guys actually eat this? Not in like a mean way, but I just feel like it's very simple, it's unique, I don't even know how to go about this. Is that enough? Who knows?"

Asking "do I smash it?" she presses the sandwich down and takes a bite. "I feel like it needed more chips - crisps - so let's try again," she says.

Concluding her assessment, she states: "I'm a firm believer in don't knock it until you try it because this is really good." Displaying the bag of Walkers, she adds: "I love these crisps specifically, and I love bread, and butter, so I feel like you couldn't have gone wrong.

"If I was rating this for lunch I would have given this a one out of 10 because this won't fill me up at all. As a snack? Sure."

Commenters were swift to highlight the serious mistake the woman had committed. One said: "Noo you were meant to use bread not toast." Replying, the woman said: "Whenever I hear bread I immediately think go toast it so that's my bad!!"

Another wrote: "I was so excited then saw the toast." The woman replied: "Nooo I didn't realise it wasn't supposed to be toasted."

Another person commented: "Not to be that guy but white bread - not toasted. Any spread is good. I think we use butter as a general term. Flora, Clover any of the I Can't Believe It's Not Butter etc all work."

They continued: "Another part of the crisp butty etiquette is the crush. Place your hand on the sandwich and crush it until you see your hand print in the bread."

A different user explained their own method. They said: "OK, deffo not supposed to use toast, and to be truly authentic, you need medium sliced white bread and a spread more like Lurpak spreadable and it needs to be reasonably well covered (heavy as it is the cement holding in the crisps), then empty the whole bag into the sandwich and press down hard, you will be shocked how much better your crisp sandwich is."
