Saudi Grand Mosque expansion improves pilgrims' experience, access for millions

The Third Saudi Expansion of the Grand Mosque has become a key pillar in efforts to improve the experience of worshippers, particularly during peak seasons such as Ramadan, Hajj and Umrah.

As one of the largest expansion projects in the mosque’s history, the development significantly increases capacity while prioritising comfort, safety and accessibility. Spanning approximately 1.214 million square metres, the expansion allows the Grand Mosque to accommodate large numbers of worshippers without congestion, ensuring smoother movement and a calmer prayer environment even during the busiest periods.

Facilities has a cooling capacity of 90,000 tons to maintain a comfortable environment year-round. It includes more than 25,000 carpets, 17,000 Zamzam water dispensers, 11,436 restrooms and ablution areas, and 1,300 speakers to ensure clear sound across all levels. The expansion also includes 458 drinking fountains, 428 escalators, 28 elevators, 80 doors, and 120 prayer areas.

These features facilitate smooth entry, exit, and movement across the ground, first, second, mezzanine, and rooftop levels. The design allows accommodation of large numbers of worshippers during peak periods.

The authority emphasised that the Third Saudi Expansion is central to its operational plans. Field teams operate around the clock to ensure full readiness of facilities and services. These efforts enhance efficiency and maintain high levels of comfort and safety for visitors.

The service system integrates technical, engineering, and human resources to provide a secure and accessible environment. It enables worshippers to perform their prayers with devotion and tranquillity.

Beyond infrastructure, the project reflects a broader commitment to enhancing the spiritual experience. By reducing physical strain, improving navigation and ensuring reliable services, the expansion allows worshippers to perform their prayers with greater focus, devotion and peace of mind.

The authority said ongoing upgrades to maintenance, cleanliness, guidance services and operational efficiency will continue, underscoring the leadership’s priority to serve pilgrims and preserve the sanctity and dignity of worship at Islam’s holiest site.
