Mumbai: West Indies displayed an amazing batting prowess in the Super-8 stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, reaching a new high in the history of the tournament. In the match played at Wankhede Cricket Stadium in Mumbai, the Caribbean team, batting first against Zimbabwe, scored 254 runs at the loss of 6 wickets in 20 overs. This is the second highest team score in the history of T20 World Cup.

Earlier, the record for the highest score was held by Sri Lanka, which scored 260 runs against Kenya in the 2007 T20 World Cup. With this explosive performance, West Indies left behind teams like India, Ireland, England and South Africa. India had scored 218 runs against England in 2007 and now the Indian team has slipped to seventh place in this list.

Hetmyer’s stormy innings

West Indies did not get off to a good start after losing the toss, losing two quick wickets in the opening overs. After this, Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell took charge and started playing aggressively against the Zimbabwe bowlers.

Hetmyer made the record for the fastest fifty in the T20 World Cup for West Indies by scoring a half-century in just 19 balls. He played a brilliant inning of 85 runs in 34 balls with the help of 7 fours and 7 sixes. Despite his dismissal, there was no reduction in the run rate.

Captain Powell’s aggressive batting

After Hetmyer’s dismissal, captain Powell took his innings forward and continued playing aggressively. He scored 59 runs in 35 balls, which included 4 fours and 4 sixes. Powell’s innings played an important role in taking West Indies past 250. The middle order and lower order batsmen also maintained the run rate. Sherfane Rutherford scored unbeaten 31 runs in 13 balls, while Romario Shepherd added 21 runs in 10 balls to give an explosive end to the innings.

Strong claim in Super-8

This performance of West Indies in an important stage like Super-8 will provide new strength to the confidence of the team. This big score of 254 runs is proof that when the Caribbean batsmen are in rhythm, they can destroy any bowling attack. After this historic innings, West Indies have shown themselves as a strong contender in the race for the semi-finals and have given a clear signal to other teams that it will not be easy to succeed with the Caribbean batting.
