Mumbai. With half-centuries from Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell and a century partnership between the two, West Indies scored 254 runs for six wickets against Zimbabwe in the Super Eight match of the ICC T20 World Cup here on Monday, which is the second highest score in the history of the tournament.
Taking advantage of two lives, Hetmyer played the best innings of his career, scoring 85 runs in 34 balls with seven sixes and the same number of fours. He also put West Indies in a strong position by making a partnership of 122 runs in 52 balls for the third wicket with Rovman Powell (59 runs, 35 balls, four fours, four sixes).
Sherfane Rutherford also played a brilliant inning of 31 not out with two sixes and three fours in 13 balls. For Zimbabwe, Richard Ngarwa and Blessing Muzarabani took two wickets each for 47 and 42 runs respectively. Captain Sikandar Raza gave away 52 runs in three overs. Raza won the toss and decided to bowl first, after which West Indies scored 55 runs for two wickets in the power play.
West Indies lost the wicket of Brendon King (09) in the third over, who was caught by Tashinga Musekiwa off Ngarwa’s ball. Hetmyer opened his account with a four off Nagarava while Muzarabani’s ball also hit the boundary. He also hit two consecutive fours in the next over of Nagarava. Opener Shai Hope (14) hit a four on Brad Evans but Brian Bennett took a brilliant catch on the next ball.
Hetmyer welcomed Graeme Cremer with two consecutive sixes and then hit three sixes on Raza to complete his half-century in just 19 balls. Hetmyer took the team’s score beyond 100 runs in the 10th over with a six in the next over of Raza.
Powell also hit a six on Evans and also hit a four and a six on Dion Myers. Powell completed his half-century in 29 balls with one run off Kramer. Hetmyer also hit a six on Kramer but was caught by Bennett on the next ball. West Indies scored 179 runs for three wickets in 15 overs.
After this, Powell also got caught by Musekiwa at the third man boundary while trying to pull Muzarabani’s short ball. Rutherford showed his prowess with fours and sixes off consecutive balls of Muzarabani while Romario Shepherd (21) hit two consecutive sixes off Nagarava but was caught by Ryan Burl.
