Telangana weather update: IMD sounds orange alert for Hyderabad, warns of rainfall, thunderstorms today. Check forecast for Sangareddy, Suryapet, Khammam and other districts

Rain in Telangana today: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an orange alert for Hyderabad today, warning of rainfall along with thunderstorms and surface winds. The IMD has also issued an alert for thunderstorms for 17 districts of Telangana on Tuesday. Sangareddy, Suryapet, Khammam, Rangareddy are also likely to receive rainfall today.

Hyderabad and its surrounding districts for the next 24 hours will see a generally cloudy sky.
After several parts of Hyderabad received first spell of rains for the year on Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast generally cloudy sky with possibility of development of thunder or lightning for Tuesday. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 32 degrees Celsius and 22 degrees Celsius, respectively. "Light to moderate rain or thundershowers very likely to occur at many places over GHMC area during next couple of hours," the Met Centre, Hyderabad said in an early morning tweet today.

Telangana recorded its first spell of rain on Monday and weather officials attributed the rain to an easterly wave moving west from the Bay of Bengal across Tamil Nadu and Kerala. "The system, aided by easterly and south-easterly winds, transported moisture inland, triggering light rain over parts of Telangana. It is moving towards the Arabian Sea, and isolated light showers are likely over the next couple of days," Y V Rama Rao, senior meteorologist at Telangana Development Planning Society, told TOI.

Hyderabad and its surrounding districts for the next 24 hours will see a generally cloudy sky. “Light rain or thundershowers are very likely to occur in parts of the city. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 32°C and 22°C, respectively,” the bulletin said.


Nirmal district logged the highest rainfall of 42 mm at Ponkal in Mamda mandal, followed by 34.5 mm each in Doulthabad (Siddipet) and Narnoor (Adilabad). Asifabad recorded 32 mm at Ginnedi, while several locations in Rangareddy, including Mamidipalle and Turkayamjal, received over 26 mm.

Orange alert for Hyderabad

According to the IMD, moderate rain and light thunderstorms with maximum wind surface are very likely to occur in Hyderabad and Rangareddy districts in the morning. The IMD has sounded an orange alert, cautioning the residents to be prepared.

The IMD issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms with lightning in isolated districts including Adilabad, Nirmal, Rangareddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri and Sangareddy. "Light Rain and Light Thunderstorms with maximum surface wind speed less than 40 kmph (In gusts) very likely to occur in Jangaon. Jogulamba gadwal. Mahabubnagar, M. malkaigiri, Nagarkurnool Nalgonda, Narayanpet Sangareddy, Suryapet, Vikarabad, Manapathy. Y. bhusanagiri, districts during next 2-3 hours," the MeT centre said.

Due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, some districts, including Adilabad, Jagityal, Mancherial, Mulugu, and Bhadradri Kothagudem may receive light to moderate rain between February 22 and 24. Hyderabad and nearby regions may see cloudy skies and occasional light showers or thunderstorms. The weather department has issued a thunderstorm alert in 17 Telangana districts for Tuesday, February 24.

According to IMD’s latest bulletin, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are very likely to occur at isolated places in Adilabad, Kumaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Rangareddy, Medchal Malkajgiri, Sangareddy and Nagarkurnool districts.
