Fury has erupted after the Home Office granted an Afghan rapist asylum in Britain months after his conviction in Austria. Omar Ali Noori, 31, arrived illegally in Britain in 2019, while on bail for the rape of a woman in Linz in 2018.

He was granted indefinite leave to remain in the country for five years by the Home Office in 2023 and was joined by his 23-year-old wife in 2023. Noori was found to possess documentation for four identities and five different dates of birth, an extradition hearing heard.

The 31-year-old, who is being held at Wandsworth Prison in south-west London, has been ordered to serve his three-year jail term in Austria after lying about his background, as per The Sun.

Judge Neeta Minhas said: "Noori was directly asked if he had committed or been accused of an offence in any country or whether he had been detained in any country.

"His response to both questions was in the negative. This was clearly not accurate ... I find [that] Noori is a fugitive."

Social media commentators lashed out at the Government for the asylum blunder, with one labelling the Home Office "not fit for purpose".

Another person said: "Is anyone actually surprised? Yet another example of Home Office incompetence."

A spokesperson for the Home Office said: "This individual's extradition proceedings are ongoing.

"We review individuals' immigration status should new information come to light that it was obtained through fraud, false representation or concealment of a material fact.

"We will not allow foreign criminals and illegal migrants to exploit our laws.

"We are reforming human rights laws and replacing the broken appeals system so we can scale up deportations."
