Temperatures could plunge well below zero next month as icy weather strikes parts of the UK, weather maps suggest. Forecast data collected by WXCHARTS.COM suggests there will be snow and much of Scotland could be enduring teeth-chatteringly low temps on Tuesday, March 10, as wintry conditions persist towards mid-March.
By 6am that day, minimum temperatures in Scotland look set to range between -1 to 3C in southern areas, and down to as low as -6C in southern parts of the Highlands. Much of the top half of Scotland is bathed in icy blue at this time, with various local authority regions inluding the likes of Argyle and Bute, Perth, Sterling, Angus, Aberdeenshire and Moray also seeing the mercury drop below zero.
Meanwhile, the lowest temperatures in England look set to range from around 4 to 7C in southern areas at this time, though it could be below zero between the North West and North East.
Minimum temperatures in Wales could range between 6C in the southeast and 2C in central and northern areas.
In Northern Ireland it could range from 1 to 3C, the maps suggest. A winter overview map suggests there could be active snowfall in various parts of the British Isles in the days leading up to March 10, and downpours lashing all four UK nations at different points.
Snow could fall in parts of Wales, the Midlands, and northern England at different points, in addition to other areas. Flakes could be falling in the North West of England and Northern Ireland in the early hours of the day itself.
However, it's worth noting that snow is notoriously difficult to predict this far out, so it's best to follow official guidance nearer the time.
Separately, the Met Office's outlook for Sunday, March 1 to Tuesday, March 10, says: "Changeable conditions are expected, with Atlantic frontal systems spreading across the UK, interspersed with drier and brighter interludes.
"Rainfall will typically be heaviest in the northwest, with much less reaching sheltered eastern areas. Some parts of the southeast may be largely fine.
"Across high ground in the north, some snow is possible at times. Winds will probably be strong at times, with a risk of gales. Temperatures are likely to be near to or slightly above average."
Meanwhile, this evening and tonight is expected to remain cloudy with further spells of rain across parts of the north and west.
"Clear spells elsewhere allowing some mist and fog to develop, especially across southern England," the national weather service says on its website.
Wednesday will bring further spells of rain "across Scotland, Northern Ireland, and parts of Wales and northern England".
"Elsewhere, early fog clearing leading to a very mild day with plenty of sunshine."
