India leads in downloads of AI apps. App downloads have increased by more than 200 percent year-on-year. However, the US remains ahead of India in usage.

India has no competition in the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI). India leads the world in downloads of generative AI apps and the use of chatbots, surpassing the US, the largest market for many AI companies. According to Sensor Tower data, India has become the world's largest market for generative AI apps, with a 207 percent increase in AI app downloads year-on-year.

One in every 5 downloads in India

According to the report, India alone accounts for 20 percent of all app downloads worldwide. However, the US remains ahead in terms of AI app usage. Compared to Indians, American users spend 21 percent more time per week on AI apps and log in more sessions than Indians.

The impact of free offers is visible

A major reason for the increase in downloads of AI apps in India is promotional offers from AI companies and the emergence of new platforms like Grok and DeepSeek. Google has partnered with Jio in India, offering its plans worth thousands of rupees for free. Similarly, Perplexity had a partnership with Airtel. OpenAI also made its ChatGPT Go plan completely free for a year at the end of last year. Furthermore, viral trends related to AI-generated apps have also increased downloads of these apps. Last year, several viral trends, including Ghibli art, 3D figurines, and the saree trend, became very popular among the public.

Indians are not spending money on apps

While Indian users are leading the way in downloading apps, they lag far behind in making in-app purchases. This means that people in India aren't spending money on premium or other features after downloading an app. In 2025, only 1% of Indian users made in-app purchases.
