“This is a difficult decision and follows a review of country-specific conditions, and our focus on investing where we see the clearest path to sustainable scale and long-term leadership,” the company said in an announcement posted on its website on Wednesday.

“Deliveroo will work closely with local teams to support customers, partners and riders through the transition.”

The platform entered the market in November 2015, according to Channel News Asia.

“Over the last eleven years we have been proud to help shape food delivery in Singapore, giving consumers access to a wide variety of restaurant and grocery partners,” Miki Kuusi, Deliveroo’s CEO and head of DoorDash International, said in the announcement.

“To all of the employees, customers, partners, and riders who have been on this journey with us and supported us along this journey – thank you.”

Deliveroo said customers can redeem any outstanding gift cards or unused credits and riders can continue delivering orders until 3 p.m. on March 4, according to The Straits Times.

Fees will be processed as usual on that day, with any outstanding fees or incentives scheduled to be paid on March 10.

The move comes as its parent company, DoorDash, is exiting several Asian countries where it operates the Deliveroo and Wolt brands. The other markets are Qatar, Japan and Uzbekistan, Bloomberg reported, citing a company statement on Wednesday.

After years of rapid growth, global food delivery services are rethinking their international expansion as mounting costs and local competition make it more difficult to reach the scale required for sustainable profits.

In Singapore, the market is largely dominated by established players such as Grab and Delivery Hero’s Foodpanda.

Online reactions to Deliveroo’s exit were largely marked by disappointment. On the r/Singapore forum on Reddit, many users said the platform offered better service than its rivals in the city-state.

“I only rely on Deliveroo for many years. Sad to see they are gone. Their customer service is the best among all the food delivery platforms,” one user said.
