T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8: Semi-final race reached melting point

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 has reached a thrilling climax in the Super 8 stage, with the semi-final race heating up across India and Sri Lanka.

England and South Africa have already booked their spots in the final four, delivering dominant performances to secure qualification early.

In Super 8 Group 2, England remain unbeaten after three wins, including a dramatic four-wicket victory over New Zealand in Colombo on February 27.

Chasing 160, England pulled off a late heist thanks to Will Jacks (32 not out) and Rehan Ahmed, finishing with six points and a strong net run rate (+1.096). This result kept Pakistan’s hopes alive, as New Zealand stayed on three points.

Today, February 28, Pakistan face a must-win do-or-die clash against eliminated co-hosts Sri Lanka in Pallekele, Kandy.

Pakistan, currently on one point after two matches, need a big victory – potentially by over 65 runs or chasing quickly – to overtake New Zealand’s net run rate and grab the second semi-final spot from Group 2.

Sri Lanka, out of contention with zero points, aim to end on a high note.

In Group 1, South Africa lead with four points from two wins, having qualified after results including India’s 72-run win over Zimbabwe (who are now eliminated). India and West Indies, both on two points, face a virtual knockout on March 1 to decide the second qualifier.

ICC Chair Jay Shah has captured the excitement, sending a message that this tournament features “55 exciting matches” where teams battle for the crown.

With margins razor-thin and upsets aplenty, the road to the March 8 final promises more drama as the last semi-final berths are decided.
