Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhav Abhiyan has emerged as a key intervention in the state’s ongoing efforts to address child malnutrition, with official data indicating notable improvements in nutritional outcomes among young children. The programme focuses on prevention, early identification and sustained management of malnutrition, particularly during the first 1,000 days of life, a period widely considered critical for physical and cognitive development.

According to the data shared by the state administration, a substantial proportion of children identified as Severely Acute Malnourished (SAM) have shown improvement, with many moving into normal nutritional categories after receiving structured support through Anganwadi centres. Large-scale screening has been a central feature of the initiative, covering millions of children across the state and enabling early detection of nutritional deficiencies.

Technology forms a significant pillar of the programme’s implementation. Growth Monitoring Devices have been deployed at nearly two lakh Anganwadi centres, while a digital Nutrition Tracker system records and monitors children’s growth patterns. The integration of this data with the Health Department’s eKavach application is intended to streamline follow-up, improve coordination between departments and reduce gaps in service delivery.

Capacity building at the grassroots level has also been prioritised. Anganwadi workers and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) have received training to identify malnutrition indicators, counsel families and ensure that nutritional interventions reach intended beneficiaries. This has helped standardise practices across districts and improve consistency in monitoring and reporting.

The scope of Sambhav Abhiyan extends beyond children already facing malnutrition. Pregnant women identified as underweight or anaemic are brought under early care through registration, regular health check-ups and nutritional supplementation, including iron, folic acid and calcium. For infants, especially those born with low birth weight or prematurely, special monitoring mechanisms are in place, with referrals to Nutrition Rehabilitation Centres for complicated cases.

An annual intensive campaign conducted between June and September strengthens the programme by ensuring statewide screening and follow-up during a defined period. Observers note that while challenges such as regional disparities and long-term sustainability remain, the initiative reflects a structured attempt to address malnutrition through coordinated health, nutrition and community-based measures.

Overall, Sambhav Abhiyan illustrates how large-scale public health programmes can combine technology, frontline workers and targeted interventions to address persistent nutritional challenges, with early results suggesting incremental but meaningful progress.
