'I'm a Brit in Australia and 5 things don't live up to home'

Countless Brits relocate to Australia, lured by the glorious weather and laid-back way of life. Doesn't it sound glorious to bask in heat, rather than freezing under an electric blanket?

But one man was revealed there are five things that aren't necessarily superior about living Down Under. So, if you're contemplating making the nearly 24-hour journey to the opposite side of the globe, you might want to consider these factors beforehand.

Stefan Parker, who relocated to Australia a year ago, shared his observations on his TikTokaccount. From the cost of living to the price of a single pint, Stefan was taken aback by some of the discoveries he made following his move.

The cost of alcohol

Stefan revealed he's shelled out the equivalent of more than £10 for pints on occasions. This left him stunned, given the average cost of a pint in the UK is around £5.50.

He estimates that the average price of a pint in Australia is £9, so considerably more expensive if you're fancying a drink after work. Nevertheless, he did acknowledge a silver lining to this, as he mentioned that he "drinks less" and "switches to schooners, which are slightly smaller than a pint".

The price of internal flights

Australia is an enormous country, and more often than not the only practical way to travel between cities is by plane. But Stefan revealed internal flights are remarkably expensive.

He wrote: "Considering Sydney is an hour from Brisbane by plane, it still sometimes costs over £150 return. When I compare it to travelling to Europe, it just took me by surprise."

Travelling less

When Stefan relocated, he assumed he'd be exploring far more of the country and visiting different destinations, but he's discovered he's actually been travelling considerably less, which came as a surprise. "Yes, the cost, but also the distance," he explained.

"You don't appreciate how big Australia is and the distances between places until you're here. It takes more planning than I anticipated, especially with work commitments."

Rental costs

He admitted he believed rental prices would be "cheaper and less competitive," but regrettably, he's found the situation quite challenging. "Don't get me wrong, you can find great places to rent, but it's hard and has queues of like 20 people+ trying to all get the same rental," he stated.

The climate

Whilst many Brits relocate Down Under for the sunshine, Stefan revealed the weather often hasn't been as pleasant as he'd expected. He commented: "The amount of rain I expected.

"Honestly, we arrived last April, and the rain was torrential a lot of the time until summer. We had like five weekends in a row of just rain. I had this image that, well, at least the Gold Coast would be sunny all year round."

However, despite these setbacks, he's remained, suggesting the advantages must be outweighing the drawbacks for him!

In the comments section, one person remarked: "Believe me, months of heat and drought are no fun - rain's better."

"Australia is a nice place to stay," someone else added.
