Anthropic’s AI chatbot Claude experienced a partial outage on March 2 evening, with users reporting access issues across claude.ai, the console, and Claude Code services.
According to the company’s status page, the disruption lasted approximately 55 minutes and was categorised as a “partial outage.” The incident was linked to “elevated errors on claude.ai, console, and claude code.”
The issue was first marked as “Investigating” at 11:49 UTC, with the company stating it was looking into the problem. At 12:06 UTC, Anthropic said it was continuing to investigate. A subsequent update at 12:21 UTC clarified that the Claude API was working as intended and that the disruption was specifically to claude.ai and login/logout paths.
This distinction is significant, as it indicates that developers using Claude via API integrations may not have been impacted in the same way as users accessing the web interface. However, users attempting to log in or interact with the web-based platform reported error messages and temporary inaccessibility.
Earlier in the evening, users encountered a message stating: “Claude will return soon. Claude is currently experiencing a temporary service disruption. We’re working on it, please check back soon,” along with a “Try again” prompt.
The outage sparked reactions online, with several users highlighting their reliance on Claude for coding, writing, research and workflow automation. While the disruption was relatively brief, it reignited conversations around AI infrastructure resilience and uptime reliability as generative AI tools become increasingly embedded in professional environments.
As of late March 2, the issue had been resolved, though Anthropic has not yet shared detailed technical explanations about the root cause of the login- errors.
Further updates are awaited if the company releases a post-incident analysis.
