The best Easter egg on supermarket shelves this year has officially been named by food experts. With Easter swiftly approaching, chocoholics will be keen to know which delicious shell has won this coveted title.
According to expert judges from the Good Food Easter Taste Awards, this particular milk chocolate egg stood above the rest after a blind taste test with more than 100 chocolate treats. The toprated egg impressed with its flavour, texture and festive appeal.
How the test was conducted
To conduct their awards, Good Food asked nine supermarkets to enter their top Easter treats across 13 categories. All products were tasted blind, with packaging removed to ensure impartiality.
Judges submitted comments and scores out of 10 for each item using anonymous online forms, with the entire process overseen by an independent adjudicator.
What is the winner?Aldi's Moser Roth Millionaire Overload Egg, priced at £8.49, is the winner for the milk chocolate egg category. The food experts explained: "This drama-filled half-egg is a super-indulgent Easter treat.
"There's a lot going on inside to channel the flavours of millionaire's shortbread: a generous layer of sweet caramel and plenty of crunchy, buttery shortbread pieces inside a super-thick milk chocolate shell - which is sprayed gold for a little extra Easter glitz."
The price may come as a shock to many, as Aldi is known for its budget prices. However, many Easter eggs hitting supermarket shelves this year are getting pricier, reported to the Guardian.
Assistant editor Samantha Bartlett from The Mirror recently went to a supermarket and was left gobsmacked by the price of Easter Eggs. She noted: "I had to do a double-take when I saw that the supermarket wanted an eye-watering £16 for its Maltesers Crunchy Milk Chocolate Easter Egg. Yes, you read that correctly."
Samantha added: "I understand that different Easter eggs have a higher or lower price point, but I've never considered Maltesers and Mars (the company who make them) to be a luxury brand, so I was stunned to see it was so expensive.
"It wasn't just the Maltesers Easter egg too that was costly, the Toblerone 'Egdy Egg' is also a whopping £15.50, as is the Cadbury Dairy Milk Chunky Ultimate Egg and the Cadbury Dairy Milk Biscoff Egg."
Easter eggs are also facing a decrease in size due to rising cocoa costs, which fuel a "fresh wave of shrinkflation." This phenomenon is when products decrease in size. Toothpaste, coffee and even heartburn medicine are among the latest products to suffer.
