There were reports that head coach Gautam Gambhir was not convinced with Sanju Samson’s performance in the recent months. However, things have changed following Samson’s unbeaten 97 against the West Indies on Sunday, which confirmed India‘s place in the T20 World Cup semifinals against England at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on February 5.
Gambhir’s comments after the match indicate that their relationship may be improving, as there seems to be a shift in sentiment.
“We all know the kind of player Sanju is. It was about supporting him, and today, when the team needed him the most, he truly delivered. This was the day he probably showed his full potential. I’ve always believed he’s a world-class player with exceptional talent, and I hope he continues this form and gives us many more innings like this,” Gambhir said.
Samson, who was recalled to the playing XI against Zimbabwe after India’s defeat to South Africa in the first Super 8 game, acknowledged the pressure on Indian cricketers in his interview with Ian Bishop.
Samson played an outstanding knock in a must-win match. Despite losing partners regularly, he remained calm and played an innings that can be described as a batting masterclass. India needed someone to step up, and Samson answered the call.
However, the pressure isn’t over. A careful look at Gambhir’s post-match comments shows that while he’s happy with Samson’s contribution, he remains cautious and expects more. This means that when Samson takes the field against England, he will have to carry forward his excellent form from Eden Gardens. The life of an Indian cricketer continues to be filled with pressure, even after delivering a match-winning performance.
