Hezbollah must be disarmed and Iran remains the core focus of Israel’s campaign

Israel’s military leadership on Monday made clear that its campaign has widened. The chief of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the army continues to insist that Hezbollah must be disarmed as part of the current conflict. Hezbollah, the Iran-aligned militant group based in Lebanon, has already been drawn into the broader Middle East war that erupted after a joint US-Israeli offensive against Iran earlier this weekend.

In recent days, missiles and drones fired from southern Lebanon marked Hezbollah’s first direct engagement in more than a year. Israel responded with airstrikes in Lebanon’s capital and other areas, sharply escalating hostilities on that front.

IDF leaders say removing Hezbollah’s ability to operate as an armed militia is central to Israel’s security goals. That reflects long-standing demands from Israeli officials that Lebanon’s state institutions alone should control weapons and military activity within its borders, and that Hezbollah cannot be allowed to act independently.

“Devastating blow” rhetoric and broader war aims

According to reports, the IDF chief also said Hezbollah will suffer a devastating blow as Israel intensifies its operations. This comes amid heavy Israeli strikes targeting Hezbollah infrastructure and commanders inside Lebanon.

The wording used by Israeli military officials suggests a campaign designed to significantly weaken Hezbollah’s combat potential, not just deter isolated attacks. That mirrors broader objectives shared by senior Israeli leaders who view both Hezbollah and Iran as existential adversaries in the ongoing regional crisis.

Iran at the center of Israel’s strategic focus

Beyond Hezbollah, Israel’s military chief confirmed that a core effort of its campaign is focussed on Iran itself. This aligns with statements from top Israeli officials who have described the current confrontation as a major, unprecedented campaign against Iranian capabilities following the death of Iran’s supreme leader during earlier strikes.

Iran has strong ties to Hezbollah and other allied militias across the region, and Israeli leaders see dismantling those networks as part of weakening Tehran’s influence and reducing threats to Israel’s security.

This focus on Iran, combined with aggressive operations against Hezbollah, underscores the dramatic escalation now unfolding across multiple fronts in the Middle East.
