According to railway rules, sleeping passengers cannot be harassed to show their tickets between 10 pm and 6 am. These rules apply to both sleeper and AC coaches.
Indian Railways is one of the country's largest transportation services. Thousands and lakhs of passengers travel daily. Nighttime is considered crucial for long-distance travel, as most passengers want to rest during this time. Furthermore, keeping passengers' convenience, safety, and comfort in mind, Indian Railways has implemented certain rules after 10 pm. These rules aim to ensure a peaceful and safe environment for every passenger. Therefore, if you plan to travel by train at night, it is essential to be aware of these rules to avoid any inconvenience during your journey. Let us now explain which rules come into effect on Indian Railways as soon as night falls and which ones you need to know before you set out on your journey.
According to railway rules, passengers sleeping between 10 pm and 6 am cannot be harassed to show their tickets. This rule applies to both sleeper and AC coaches.
However, passengers boarding the train after 10 pm may be subject to ticket checks. If any officer repeatedly harasses them without reason, a complaint can be lodged by calling the helpline at 139.
It is also important to maintain silence on the train at night. Talking loudly, using a mobile phone on loudspeakers, or listening to music without headphones are considered violations of the rules.
Action can be taken against any passenger causing disturbance to others. Under Section 145 of the Railway Act 1989, a fine of 500 to 1000 rupees can be imposed for disturbing the peace.
After 10 pm, the main coach lights are turned off, and only the night light remains on, so that passengers can sleep comfortably. In such a situation, people traveling in groups cannot talk loudly.
Furthermore, late-night dining services are discontinued on some trains. Passengers can book meals in advance if needed. The movement of cleaning staff is also restricted at night to avoid disruptions to passengers' sleep.
For safety reasons, charging points are also closed on many trains from 11 pm to 5 am to prevent incidents like short circuits.
In sleeper coaches, passengers on the middle berth can open their seat only between 10 pm and 6 am. During this time, passengers on the lower berths cannot obstruct them. However, after 6 am, the middle berth must be closed again to provide convenience to passengers sitting below.
