Two factors that will decide Bruno Fernandes' Man Utd future as skipper ponders next move

Bruno Fernandes will not seek assurances about Manchester United’s summer signings before deciding his future.

The United captain is under contract until 2028, but could leave Old Trafford in the summer. United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and other senior figures are desperate to keep Fernandes, and want him to extend his deal.

The club has made its feelings clear to the Portuguese international - with United willing to hand Fernandes a new and improved contract worth up to £400,000-a-week.

Fernandes, who will be 32 in September, knows his next deal could be the last significant one of his career. And he wants to know United's ambitions match his own, when it comes to the club's chances of winning major trophies.

But despite his influence at the club as captain, Fernandes will not demand to know who club bosses are intending to sign. United have targeted the likes of Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton and Newcastle duo Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

It's understood Fernandes will base his decision on whether or not United are in the Champions League next season. While Fernandes also wants to see if United decide to make Michael Carrick the club's permanent manager.

Fernandes has been impressed with the impact Carrick has made since taking charge on an interim basis - and has a strong relationship with him.

Fernandes will wait until the end of the season before deciding his next move. He is expected to hold talks with club bosses, before heading to the World Cup in North America with Portugal.

Fernandes is operating from a strong bargaining position, considering his influence in the dressing room and on-going value to the team.

The former Sporting Lisbon star has been United's best and most consistent player in recent seasons. While he snubbed a host of mega offers from Saudi Pro Leagueclubs last summer, in favour of remaining at United.

United remain confident of persuading Fernandes to stay, but know there will be little or no chance if Carrick fails to secure a top four finish.
