A busy stretch of the M5 motorway has been closed this evening following a "police incident", with emergency services rushing to the scene. The southbound section of the motorway between junction 18 (Avonmouth) and junction 19 (Portishead) is closed "while emergency services respond to a concern for welfare incident".
Traffic monitoring site Inrix has reported "long delays due to a police incident" from junction 18 M49 to junction 19 A369 Martcombe Road (Portishead). There is also heavy traffic leading to junction 17 (Cribbs Causeway)." An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said: "The M5 southbound carriageway is currently closed between junction 18 (Avonmouth) and junction 19 (Portishead) while emergency services respond to a concern for welfare incident. The northbound carriageway remains open at this time."]
