BBC slammed for massive mistake as it airs breaking Cyprus news

The BBC has been slammed for a huge mistake as it cut to breaking news about Cyprus after one of its military bases was hit by a drone. RAF base Akrotiri was hit by a one-way attack drone amid the fresh conflict in the Middle East, hitting the airport's runway. Sirens went off on the base on Monday (March 2), with the nearby public airport at Paphos evacuating a passenger terminal after a suspicious object was picked up on radars.

But when BBC presenter Nina Warhurst stepped up to break the news, viewers were unhappy - as the name Cyprus was spelled wrong on a graphic. It was instead spelled 'Cyrpus', with Nina stepping up to the map to explain the situation.

Furious viewers took to X to tweet: "Well done @BBCNews graphics department. Classic."

Another echoed: "Wasn't spelt like that when I lived there..."

And a third said: "And I thought they had a fact checking team!"

"I'm glad my TV licence money is being well spent," another fan posted.

It comes after BBC New's Chief North American Correspondent Gary O'Donoghue shared an experience he had at the retailer Boots which has caused him to boycott the high street chain.

He tweeted this week: "The branch of Boots on Great Portland Street has just told me that I should have someone with me when I come out as a blind person.

"When I objected to them telling me [how] to lead my life, they said it was for my own good. Unbelievable. Last time I go in there #Boots."

Boots replied to the post to say: "Hi Gary, thank you for making us aware and we're so sorry to hear of your experience. If you can please DM with more details then we can ensure this [is] investigated and addressed. Many thanks."

Express.co.uk has contacted Boots for further comment.
