A beloved sandwich shop in the heart of a major UK city has confirmed its imminent closure. The news comes after 11 bars and restaurants have already shut for good around the city so far this year.
Soku Sarnie, located on Old Eldon Square in Newcastle, has told customers that the popular lunch time spot will shut on Friday (March 6). The business has attracted a lot of attention on Instagram in recent times, with foodies being drawn towards its sandwich creations such as the Siracha Honey Philly Cheese, Thai Hot Honey Fried Chicken, Meatball Sub and Caramelised Cauli Cheese. However, the shop will close this week with the owners confirming they are "pausing" their sandwich offerings for now.
As reported by Chronicle Live, the owners added: "This decision comes due to circumstances beyond our control, BUT this isn't the end, just a temporary break."
A number of Geordie locals have reacted to the announcement, with one writing on social media: "Truly sad news! But gonna catch you before you go." A second simply commented: "Noooooooo".
The closure of Soku Sarnie comes following the end of 11 eateries across Newcastle so far this year. A number of others were also forced to shut in 2025, including Leila Lily's, Earl of Pitt Street, Prohibition.

Eateries across the UK are continuing to struggle with soaring costs, including high energy bills, food inflation and increased staff wages. These factors combined with reduced consumer spending have made the economic climate tough for food traders.
Some businesses are also continuing to struggle from the financial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Many have not fully recovered from the impact of the pandemic which has forced them into permanent closure.
