Holi Eye Care Tips: Holi, the festival of colors, brings happiness but the colors sold in the market containing synthetic and poisonous chemicals can become a disaster for your eyes. Metals and alkaline elements present in colors can cause severe inflammation and permanent damage to the eyes.

Most of the colors available in the market contain glass powder, lead and dangerous synthetic chemicals. These elements can badly injure the cornea, the most delicate layer of the eyes. Water balloons or sharp splashes double this danger, which can even lead to bleeding in the inner part of the eyes.

what to do in emergency

If you accidentally get color in your eyes, instead of panicing, adopt these scientific methods.

Don’t make the mistake of rubbing

Rubbing the eyes can cause paint particles to scratch the cornea. First of all, wash your hands and clean the area around the eyes.

flushing technique

Tilt your head to one side. Let clean tap water or sterile saline flow from the inner corner of the eye to the outside.

blink eyes

While pouring water, keep blinking continuously so that the color trapped in the depth comes out. Repeat this process for at least 15 minutes.

attention to temperature

Never use hot or lukewarm water to wash eyes, only plain and clean water is safe.

Do not adopt these methods even by mistake

Often people resort to home remedies to reduce eye irritation which can worsen the situation.

  • Avoid putting rose water, milk, ghee or oil in the eyes. These can increase infection.
  • Do not apply any eye drops bought from a medical store without doctor’s advice. Some drops contain steroids which can harm the eyes.
  • If you wear lenses then remove them before playing Holi. If the color has gone away after wearing the lenses, get them removed immediately with the help of a doctor.

If you want to enjoy Holi, then keep safety in mind also. If redness, blurring or severe pain persists even after washing with water for 15 minutes, contact an eye specialist (Ophthalmologist) without any delay.
