While the festival symbolizes joy, colors, and togetherness, it has also become a peak season for online scammers exploiting people’s excitement and distraction.

The Ministry of Home Affairs and the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) have issued advisories warning the public about an increase in digital scams linked to fake job offers, low-rent property listings, fraudulent matrimonial connections, and instant loan applications.

Officials are reminding citizens: celebrate with colors, not with financial losses.

Fake Job Offers and Instant Loan Apps on the Rise

One of the most common scams reported during festive periods involves fraudulent job offers. Victims often receive unsolicited emails or messages promising high-paying roles without any formal application or interview process. Once the victim shows interest, scammers demand “processing fees,” “registration charges,” or “joining fees.”

Authorities emphasize that legitimate companies follow structured recruitment processes that include formal applications and interviews. Any demand for payment in exchange for employment should be treated as a red flag.

Instant loan applications are another growing threat. These apps typically promise quick approvals, minimal documentation, low interest rates, and no credit score requirements. Many ask users to download APK files from unofficial sources instead of trusted app stores. Once installed, these malicious apps may access personal data such as contacts, photos, and messages. Victims are later blackmailed or harassed for repayment under inflated terms.

Experts advise that loans should only be taken from RBI-registered banks or NBFCs, and apps must be downloaded exclusively from verified platforms.

Rental Scams Targeting Urban Home Seekers

Another popular fraud tactic involves fake rental property listings. Scammers post advertisements for attractive flats in prime locations at unusually low rents on property portals or social media platforms. When contacted, they request advance payments under the pretext of visitor passes, refundable deposits, or booking fees before allowing property visits.

In many cases, once the payment is made, the fraudster disappears, and the property either does not exist or belongs to someone else.

Authorities recommend:

• Never paying advance fees before physically verifying the property.

• Confirming the identity of the owner or agent.

• Signing proper agreements before making payments.

If a deal seems too good to be true, it likely is.

Matrimonial and Gift Delivery Frauds

Online dating and matrimonial scams have also seen a spike. Fraudsters often create fake profiles claiming to be professionals working abroad. After building emotional trust, they claim to send expensive gifts. Soon after, victims receive calls or messages demanding payment for customs clearance, courier fees, or taxes.

In reality, no gift exists. Victims, influenced by emotional pressure, end up transferring money.

Cyber experts warn users not to trust strangers online too quickly and to avoid making payments through suspicious courier or customs links. Emotional urgency and sudden financial requests are major warning signs.

How to Stay Safe This Holi

Festivals often create an environment where people let their guard down. Cybercriminals take advantage of this distraction. Authorities recommend the following precautions:

• Verify every job offer through official company websites.

• Avoid downloading apps from unknown sources.

• Cross-check rental listings before transferring money.

• Do not share OTPs, personal details, or financial information with unknown callers.

• Be cautious of emotional manipulation in online relationships.

If you suspect cyber fraud, immediately report it via the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or file a complaint at the official cybercrime reporting portal.
