Weisz was born in Westminster, London, and her father George was a Hungarian Jewish mechanical engineer. He gained recognition for pioneering a particular type of ventilator.

Her mother, Edith, originates from Vienna in Austria and was a teacher-turned-psychotherapist. Notably, the scholar and social activist James Parkes assisted her mother's family in leaving Austria for England.

Weisz also has a younger sister, Minnie, who works as a visual artist and, as their parents cherished the arts, they supported their children in pursuing their own ambitions.

Recognised as an "English rose", she started modelling at the age of 14. She studied English at Cambridge University before shifting her focus to acting.

During her time at university, she was a contemporary of major stars including Sacha Baron Cohen, Alexander Armstrong, Emily Maitlis, Sue Perkins, Mel Giedroyc, Richard Osman and Ben Miller. She had a brief romance with the Death in Paradise actor whilst they were both students.

Miller once told the Daily Mail: "I joined the Footlights drama club and met a lot of creative, witty people, including Rachel Weisz, who was my girlfriend for a time. Footlights gave me enormous confidence, and being around people who were so funny and clever was wonderful."

Weisz's acting career kicked off in the early 1990s, with notable performances in Design for Living and The Mummy films. In February 2026, she confirmed her return as the cherished Evelyn O'Connell in a fourth Mummy instalment, set for release in May 2028.

Regarding her private life, she started a relationship with American filmmaker and producer Darren Aronofsky in 2001, after meeting backstage at London's Almeida Theatre during her run in The Shape of Things. They relocated to New York City the next year and became engaged in 2005. Their son arrived the following year.

Yet by November 2010, the pair revealed they had separated months earlier but remained close mates and were committed to co-parenting their son in New York. In December 2010, Weisz started seeing James Bond actor Daniel Craig, a long-standing friend. The duo had previously collaborated on Dream House.

By June 2011 they tied the knot in an intimate New York ceremony, attended by merely four guests. Speaking to GQ magazine in 2012, Craig revealed: "We got away with it. We did it privately. And I've got a lot of people to thank for that.

"But that was the point. We did it for private reasons. Because we didn't want it [expletive], because that would be sharing a secret. And the whole point is that it was a secret. A secret is a secret in my mind." In September 2018, it was revealed the couple had welcomed a daughter.

Rachel confessed that prior to her relationship with the Knives Out star, marriage had never been on her agenda. She told the Evening Standard: "I never thought that I would get married. It was not an ambition of mine. It was the opposite. I couldn't relate to romantic comedies – marriage seems to be the whole point of them. Then it just happened, happily, at a more mature moment."
