Tensions were at an all-time high on Silent Witness as BBC viewers saw the last episode of series 29 last night (March 3). However, there's good news for fans of the crime drama as its future was confirmed this week.

The final two episodes, titled Shame, saw Nikki Alexander (Emilia Fox) and the team tasked with solving the complex murder of a woman whose body was discovered in a river.

It turns out the body was a woman called Mei Li, a British-Chinese pro-democracy activist who had a bounty on her head from the Hong Kong government. Mei was engaged to security services agent Alex Burns, who identified her body at the morgue.

As Nikki finds evidence that suggests Mei was already dead before she supposedly drowned herself, the case takes an unexpected turn.

Here's everything you need to know about the second instalment of Shame.

BBC fans discovered that the woman in the river wasn't Mei Li at the end of episode nine, and the real 23-year-old was hiding in her parents' restaurant.

She was involved with protesting to get a billionaire political activist and businessman out of prison, which the Hong Kong authorities saw as a threat.

As Kitt informs the team that the Hong Kong officials want HK$1 million for Mei's arrest, she's forced to leave by her parents for her own safety and told to go into hiding.

Despite initial beliefs that the person whose body was found was Mei Li, the team later discovered it was a woman called Na Chen.

She was a Chinese national with a U.S. student visa and attended Harvard. However, she ended up having an affair with a professor and stealing intellectual property.

Sadly, her death happened because of the theft, which also saw Rodrigo killed after being poisoned.

In a shocking twist, it turns out that a woman called Linda had been responsible for the murders of both Na Chen and Rodrigo.

Linda was linked with Helen, whom Nikki had met after an incident in episode nine, and later went to drinks with.

While at a bar, Helen spikes Nikki and leads her to a warehouse where Linda is waiting for them.

It transpires that Helen and Nikki have been trying to steal tech from the company all along. Kit then uncovers that Helen once worked for a British-American company called Forgeon Systems, who turn IT into the "weapons of tomorrow".

Nikki's life is in danger when Linda wants Helen to give her more Bufotoxin, which killed Rodrigo, although she refuses.

As a fight breaks out between the two women, Jack arrives and saves Nikki as the authorities arrive.

Following the end of series 29, the official Silent Witness Instagram account confirmed it will be back for another instalment.

They captioned their post: "#SilentWitness will return next year for its 30th Series!"

However, it looks as though production may already be underway as Bodenham Arboretum announced the programme had been filming at their location.

Sharing a collection of images with Emelia Fox, they wrote: "Staff couldn't hide their delight when actress Emelia Fox, who plays pathologist Dr Nikki Alexander, popped into the Visitor Centre to say goodbye and happily obliged with a photocall.

"What a pleasure it has been! The new series will be screened in January next year...watch out for the local landmarks!"

Silent Witness is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
