A cherished television series that first graced our screens on the BBC nearly 40 years ago is rumoured to be in line for a reboot.

See-Saw Films, the production company behind Sweetpea, Heartstopper and Slow Horses, are reportedly developing a "contemporary reimagining" of Lovejoy.

The programme ran for six series from 1986 until its conclusion in 1994, boasting a cast including Thursday Murder Club actress Celia Imrie and Downton Abbey's Phyllis Logan.

Ian McShane famously fronted the drama, based on John Grant's novel series, as the eponymous anti-hero. Fans have previously lauded the "perfect" show online, with one noting that Lovejoy "was possibly the most wonderful character you've never heard of".

Another praised the series as "perfect in every way", whilst a third viewer added: "you can watch this time and time again", reports the Mirror.

Deadline reports that the new Lovejoy adaptation has yet to secure a streaming or broadcasting platform, and details regarding plot direction or potential casting remain under wraps.

McShane starred in the original as a roguish antiques dealer operating in East Anglia, possessing an uncanny ability to distinguish exceptional items and authentic antiques from counterfeits.

His portrayal of a charming rogue and con artist with a heart of gold quickly endeared him to viewers.

In contrast to the novels, which depict Lovejoy in a less favourable light, the television series emphasised the protagonist's more appealing traits.

In each episode, Lovejoy and his 17 year old apprentice Eric Catchpole (Chris Jury) would devise cunning schemes to assist those in need.

Lovejoy isn't the only revival in the pipeline, with numerous nostalgic favourites set to grace our screens shortly.

Dalziel and Pascoe is making a comeback this year featuring Kerry Godliman and Nina Singh as the lead detectives, whilst a fresh adaptation of A Woman of Substance is scheduled to broadcast this month starring Vera's Brenda Blethyn.
