Fabian Hurzeler furiously blasts Arsenal again after Mikel Arteta touchline confrontation
Football | March 5, 2026 8:39 AM CST

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler has blasted Arsenal's tactics from their Premier League clash on Wednesday evening. Bukayo Saka scored the only goal of the game after just nine minutes, with the Gunners digging in and delivering a superb defensive performance to pick up a vital three points.

However, Hurzeler did not quite see it as a dogged display from Arsenal as he brutally tore into the tactics they deployed at Amex Stadium and the gamesmanship throughout.

In his post-match press conference, he said: "There was only one team who tried to play football today. I ask one question. Did you see a Premier League game, a goalkeeper going down three times?

"We should focus on our performance, we cannot control these types of things. I made my point before the game.

On facing Arsenal, he added: "Very difficult, but we tried hard. We tried to keep the ball moving. We tried to create chances. These types of opponents you can only punish them."

When told of Hurzeler's comments prior to his arrival to face questions, Arteta simply said: "What a surprise." He opted to not further elaborate on his comments. When later asked if he was bothered by what other managers think, he said: "It depends on the comment, the person and the purpose."

Hurzeler was also seething during the game with a fiery confrontation taking place between him and Arteta on the sidelines during the first half.

The Seagulls boss was constantly complaining to fourth official Michael Salisbury over Arsenal's delay in taking set-pieces and goal-kicks. He was also left furious by the call not to award a penalty for a Gabriel Martinelli foul on Mats Wieffer.

Ahead of the game, he also spoke on his annoyance regarding the time taken for corners and throw-ins ahead of the game with it clear he is not the biggest fan of how Arsenal go about their business.

"Sometimes they spend one minute to take a corner if they are leading," said Hurzeler. "The main topic is to make a clear rule on how much time you can waste for a corner, for a throw-in, for a free-kick.

"I think no-one recognises it, but when Arsenal have a corner and they are leading, sometimes they spend over one minute just to take a corner. Therefore, I think we just have to make clear rules. The game is changing so much.

"I have the opinion that every supporter who pays a lot of money to go to the stadiums and watch our games should see the same net-to-game time because they pay a lot of money.

"They want to see a football event and they don't want to see maybe 50 minutes the ball is in the game and 40 minutes the game is not. Therefore, that's how I see it, but I think we won't change these rules immediately."
