A major outdoor retailer with more than 300 stores will shut another store imminently, followinga wave of closures last year. A Trespass employee said the company may decide to close its Southampton store on Above Bar Street on Sunday, although its official last day of trading is Monday, March 9, with a huge clearance sale currently underway.

Southampton shoppers can visit two nearby stores in Eastleigh and Whiteley for outdoor gear and clothing, both just a few miles away. The retailer announced in 2024 that it would begin a wave of closures due to financial difficulties and lower footfall. It confirmed six closures in 2023, and by 2024, shops in Coventry, Norwich and Middlesbrough joined the list.

Last year, at least four shops were closed, including its Aylesbury and Ipswich branches. Shops in Watford and Horsham also ceased trading in 2025. In Horsham, all staff were understood to have been made redundant.

Visit Horsham announced on Facebook: "We are sorry to learn that Trespass is closing. Good luck to all the staff. We understand that they will be made redundant.

"As you can imagine, it's a very difficult time for them, and they would rather not discuss the situation in the store. They are lovely people, and if anyone else is looking for staff in Horsham, then you might want to consider them."

The Express contacted Trespass for comment.

Trespass is far from the only store to have closed stores across the UK. According to the Centre for Retail Research, 13,479 stores closed their doors for good in 2024, which was a 28% increase on 2023.

Retailers such as New Look have closed swathes of shops, while Quiz entered administration in February for the third time in six years.

Its administrator Interpath said Quiz had encountered challenges such as "changing consumer habits, cost pressures from business rates and the recent increases to employment costs".

Several banks have also closed hundreds of brick and mortar sites, stating that the majority of its customers have now moved online.
