An important update has emerged for candidates preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2026. The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) of the Central Government has released the service-wise details of the vacancies to be filled in various services for the Civil Services Examination 2026. This year, a total of 933 posts will be filled, slightly lower than last year. This examination will select officers for various Group A and Group B services, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Foreign Service (IFS). The Civil Services Preliminary Examination will be held on May 24, 2026.
How many vacancies are there in the IAS, IPS, and IFS?
According to data released by the UPSC, a total of 180 vacancies are available in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). Of these, 72 are reserved for the unreserved category, while 27 are reserved for SC, 14 for ST, 49 for OBC, and 18 for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS).
A total of 150 posts have been allocated in the Indian Police Service (IPS). Of these, 62 are unreserved, 19 are for SC, 17 for ST, 37 for OBC, and 15 for EWS candidates.
In addition, a total of 40 posts have been allocated in the Indian Foreign Service (IFS). Of these, 16 are unreserved, 6 for SC, 3 for ST, 11 for OBC, and 4 for EWS candidates.
Regarding other services, the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) has 94 posts, and another revenue service has 180 posts. A total of 933 posts will be filled by combining these services and other central services.
Category-wise vacancies?
If we look at the total number of vacancies by category, 397 of the 933 vacancies are for unreserved categories. Additionally, 243 posts are reserved for OBC candidates, 133 for Scheduled Castes (SC), 72 for Scheduled Tribes (ST), and 88 for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS).
Opportunities are also available for candidates with disabilities. A total of 33 posts are reserved for various disability categories.
The selection process is conducted in three stages.
The Civil Services Examination is conducted in three stages: the Preliminary Examination (Prelims). Candidates who qualify are called for the Main Examination (Mains).
Candidates who qualify in the Main Examination are invited for an interview or personality test. The final merit list is prepared based on the 1750 marks of the Main Examination and 275 marks of the interview.
