With digital services becoming a part of everyday life, internet users in India are increasingly exposed to cyber threats. Whether it is online banking, shopping, social media, or digital payments, millions of people rely on the internet for daily activities. However, this growing digital dependence has also made users more vulnerable to cybercrime.
A recent report by cybersecurity firm Kaspersky highlights the scale of the threat. According to the report, more than 47 million web-based cyber threats were detected and blocked in India during 2025, showing how rapidly cyber risks are rising in the country.
Over 4.7 Crore Cyber Threats Detected in 2025
Data from the Kaspersky Security Network reveals that between January and December 2025, the company’s security systems blocked 47,526,422 internet-based cyber threats targeting users in India.
These attacks included malicious websites, phishing attempts, and other web-based threats designed to steal sensitive information or infect devices with malware.
The report further revealed that around 24.7 percent of internet users in India were affected by some form of online threat, meaning nearly one out of every four users encountered cyber risks during the year.
On average, the country faced over 130,000 web-based cyber threats daily, highlighting the growing sophistication and scale of digital attacks.
India’s Global Ranking in Web-Based Threats
Despite the high number of cyber threats detected, India ranked 62nd globally in terms of users affected by web-based attacks, according to the report.
Experts believe the ranking reflects the rapid expansion of internet access across the country. As millions of new users join the digital ecosystem each year, the chances of cyber threats also increase.
Hackers Exploit Browser Vulnerabilities
One of the most common ways cybercriminals target users is by exploiting security weaknesses in web browsers and their plugins.
Hackers take advantage of outdated software or unpatched vulnerabilities to gain access to computers and smartphones. Once a device is compromised, attackers may attempt to steal passwords, banking details, or personal information.
These attacks often occur silently in the background, making them difficult for users to detect.
Rise of Fileless Malware Attacks
The report also identified fileless malware as one of the most dangerous cyber threats in 2025.
Unlike traditional malware, fileless malware does not rely on files stored on the hard drive. Instead, it operates directly in a computer’s memory, leaving minimal traces behind. This makes it significantly harder for traditional antivirus programs to detect and remove.
Because of its stealthy nature, fileless malware has become a preferred tool for cybercriminals targeting individuals and organizations.
Cyber Threats Increasing Worldwide
The report also noted that cyber risks are rising globally, not just in India.
In 2025:
-
Malicious email attacks increased by about 15 percent worldwide.
-
Nearly one out of every two emails sent globally was classified as spam.
Many of these emails contain phishing links, scam offers, or malware attachments designed to trick users into sharing sensitive data.
How Internet Users Can Stay Safe
Cybersecurity experts recommend several basic precautions to reduce the risk of online attacks:
-
Use strong and unique passwords for online accounts.
-
Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) whenever possible.
-
Keep software, browsers, and mobile apps updated.
-
Avoid clicking suspicious links in emails or messages.
-
Install reliable security software or antivirus tools.
Practicing these simple steps can significantly lower the chances of falling victim to cybercrime.
Growing Need for Cyber Awareness
As internet usage continues to expand across India, experts stress the importance of cybersecurity awareness among users. With millions of new digital users entering the online ecosystem each year, understanding basic online safety practices is becoming increasingly important.
Staying alert, using secure technology, and following recommended safety measures can help individuals protect their personal and financial information from cyber threats in the digital age.
