Women's Day 2026: International Women's Day is celebrated every year on March 8th. This day honors women's achievements and raises awareness about their rights. Even today, many women in society are unaware of the various protections and rights afforded to them by the law after divorce. If women are properly informed about their rights, they can remain self-reliant and secure even in difficult circumstances. In this context, we are sharing some of these rights.
The Right to Financial Support After Divorce
Financial security is often a major concern after divorce. Therefore, the law grants women the right to receive maintenance (alimony). If a woman's income is low or she is unable to support herself, she can seek financial assistance from the court.
The court considers several factors when making this decision, including the husband and wife's income, the duration of the marriage, their age and health, and who is responsible for the children. In many cases, the court orders a fixed monthly payment, while in some cases, the entire amount may be fixed at one time. If the husband refuses to pay the agreed amount, the court can take legal action against him.
Right to a Safe Place to Live
During the divorce process, many women fear being thrown out of their homes. However, Indian law protects women in this regard. A woman has the right to live in the home where she lived with her husband, even if the house is not owned by her.
If there is any kind of pressure, conflict, or domestic violence from her in-laws, a woman can seek protection from the court. If necessary, the court can also arrange for a separate safe living arrangement for the woman.
Child Care and Custody Rights
Child care is one of the most important issues in divorce cases. When making a decision, the court prioritizes the child's best interests over the wishes of the parents. The decision is made based on the child's age, education, care, and emotional needs.
Custody of young children is often awarded to the mother, as it is believed that maternal care is more important during childhood. However, the court decides on the circumstances of each case. Custody also determines who will make decisions regarding the child's future and with whom the child will live.
On the occasion of Women's Day, it is important to understand that the law provides women with many protections. By knowing their rights, women can face life's challenges with greater confidence and strength.
