International Women's Day 2026: International Women's Day is celebrated every year on March 8th. The purpose of this day is to honor the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and promote gender equality. The theme of International Women's Day in 2026 is "Rights, Justice, Action for All Women and Girls." It aims to protect the rights of women and girls and eliminate discrimination and inequality in society. In India, several schemes and initiatives have been launched by the central and state governments for the safety and empowerment of women.
Operation "Meri Saheli"
In 2020, the Indian Railways launched Operation "Meri Saheli" to protect women's safety. Under this initiative, special teams of female RPF personnel were formed to protect women passengers, especially those traveling alone. Currently, approximately 250 "Meri Saheli" teams are deployed across the country, interacting with women on trains and ensuring their safety.
Special Cabs and Autos for Women
In many cities, cabs and autos driven by women drivers have been introduced to ensure women's safety. Ride-hailing companies like Uber have also introduced a "Women Rider Priority" feature, allowing female passengers to prioritize female drivers.
The "Saheli Pink Smart Card" Scheme
Recently, the Delhi government launched the Saheli Pink Smart Card Scheme. Under this scheme, women will be able to travel free of charge on Delhi buses. The card's unique feature is that it can also be used on the Delhi Metro and the Regional Rapid Transit System.
Separate Rail and Metro Coaches for Women
For the convenience and safety of women, separate coaches have been created for women in many cities. The first coach of the Delhi Metro is reserved exclusively for women, while the Mumbai Suburban Railway also has separate compartments for women, allowing them to travel comfortably during rush hours.
"Beti Bachao Beti Padhao" Scheme
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao" scheme in 2015. This scheme aims to eliminate discrimination against girls and promote their education and rights. The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSAY) is also implemented under this scheme, under which parents can open a bank account in their daughters' names.
Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana
The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVVY) provides financial assistance to pregnant women and lactating mothers. This scheme provides women with financial assistance of ₹5,000 in three installments to provide them with financial support during pregnancy.
Kishori Shakti Yojana
The Kishori Shakti Yojana aims to improve the health, nutrition, and skill development of girls aged 11 to 18. This scheme also provides adolescent girls with information on life skills, education, and health. These initiatives aim to provide a safe environment for women and opportunities for them to advance in all areas of society.
