Chaitra Navratri 2026 Vrat Rules: This year, Chaitra Navratri begins on Thursday, March 19th. During the nine days of Chaitra Navratri, people worship the nine forms of Goddess Durga, observe fasts, and perform havans. Fasting for the entire nine days is a difficult task. Not everyone can fast for nine days, so some observe fasts on the first day of Navratri and on Durgashtami. Let's explore the Chaitra Navratri fasting rules for such people. Failure to follow these rules will prevent the full benefits of the fast.

Chaitra Navratri 2026: Rules for the First and Ashtami Fasts
Those who fast on the first and Ashtami of Chaitra Navratri are called the beginning and end fasts, or Yugma fasts. These also require strict adherence to these rules.
On the first day of Chaitra Navratri, i.e., Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, bathe in the morning and wear clean clothes. Then, taking Akshat (rice flour), red flowers, and water in your hand, resolve the Chaitra Navratri fast and worship of Goddess Durga. In this, you state that you will observe a fast on the first day and Ashtami and worship the Goddess.

After resolving the Chaitra Navratri fast and worship, install a Kalash (urn) and light an eternal flame (Akhand Jyoti) there. If this is not possible, skip the Kalash installation, but instead light an eternal flame for Goddess Durga at the place of worship. If you cannot even light the eternal flame, light a ghee lamp during the morning and evening prayers.

During the fast, you should either consume fruits, milk, nuts, and juices, or eat Satvik food, which includes dishes made with buckwheat flour, water chestnut flour, sago, and rock salt.

During this fast, you must abstain from Tamasic foods for the entire nine days, including onions, garlic, meat, and alcohol. You should abstain from grains such as wheat, rice, and lentils during the fast.

Although you won't fast for the entire nine days, you must still follow the rules of celibacy throughout Navratri.

During these days, stay away from lust, anger, greed, and attachment. Maintain peace in your home and surroundings.

Worship Goddess Shailputri on Pratipada and Goddess Mahagauri on Durgashtami. Then, perform Kanya Puja.

Perform the Navratri havan on Durgashtami. This will remove negativity from your home.

Complete the fast by breaking the fast on Mahanavami. In many places, people break the fast only after the completion of the Navratri havan by taking prasad. In some places, the fast is broken on Mahanavami, and in others, on Dashami. Break the fast according to the rituals prevalent in your area.

Observing the Chaitra Navratri fast in this manner will bring auspicious results for you.
