A high street store in a major city centre is set to close. It comes amid a wave of closures hitting high streets across the UK, as well as recurring reports of businesses collapsing into administration.

Ecco, a Danish shoe and leather accessories shop, is set to close its branch in Nottingham city centre after announcing that the branch on Bridlesmith Gate is having a closing-down sale.

ECCO was founded in 1963 by Birte and Karl Toosbuy, who trained as a shoemaker and dreamed of having his own shoe factory and running his own business. It currently has more than 40 shops and outlets across the UK.

The beloved branch in Nottingham has been located on the historic street for around nine years and is the brand's only branch in the East Midlands, reports Nottinghamshire Live.

Shoppers have been informed of a closing-down sale, with signs plastered on the shop windows, reading "everything must go". The reason for the closure has not been disclosed, nor has the last day of trading.

The unit previously occupied by vintage store Glass Onion at 40-42 Bridlesmith Gate is also currently vacant as the business relocated to bigger premises at 54-56 in January.

Arran Bailey, managing director of ALB Group, who owns both of the units, said: "Glass Onion is fantastic for Nottingham and Bridlesmith Gate. We didn't want to lose them as a tenant when they had to leave their initial premises.

"We offered them the other unit and we're really happy to have them as tenants."
