T20 World Cup 2026: Biggest Successful Run Chases in Tournament
Cricket Gully | March 8, 2026 4:39 AM CST

There's nothing quite like a thrilling chase in T20 cricket. When teams set their sights on big totals, it turns into an adrenaline-fueled spectacle, with players pacing their innings and adjusting to the unfolding drama. Whether it’s a strategic approach taken deep into the game or a full-throttle assault right from the first ball, every successful pursuit of a hefty score is a sight to behold.

The T20 World Cup 2026 has been no exception. This tournament has delivered its fair share of nail-biting contests, especially as we approach the finals, where India is gearing up to face New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. While some low-scoring thrillers kept the audience on the edge of their seats, it was the high-scoring showdowns that truly ignited fierce battles between bat and ball.

Match 52: India vs West Indies

India faced off against the West Indies in a crucial virtual knock-out match, where the winner would secure a spot in the semi-finals. The West Indies, batting first, got off to a slow start during the powerplay and struggled with wickets falling in the middle overs. Roston Chase played a key role, scoring 40 runs off 25 balls, which helped stabilize their innings. A late surge came from Rovman Powell and Jason Holder, who put together an impressive unbeaten partnership of 76 runs in just 35 balls, lifting the West Indies to a solid total of 195.

In response, India chased down the target of 196 thanks to a brilliant performance from Sanju Samson. With wickets tumbling around him and other batters getting starts but failing to convert, the wicketkeeper remained composed and steadily chipped away at the score. He finished not out on 97 runs from 50 balls, leading India to victory and securing their place in the semi-finals.

Match 30: Sri Lanka vs Australia

Before taking on Sri Lanka, Australia found themselves on the edge of elimination in the group stages, needing a win against the co-hosts to keep their hopes of qualification alive. Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head got the Aussies off to a blazing start, aiming to surpass the 200-run mark before the Lankan bowlers managed to rein things in, limiting the 2021 champions to just 181 runs. From that point on, it was all about Pathum Nissanka.

With solid support from Kusal Mendis, who scored 51 off 38 balls, the opener’s unbeaten century, filled with elegant strokes and a late flurry of runs, propelled the Lankan Lions into the Super-8 stage, leaving the Aussies on the brink of elimination in what turned out to be a rather disappointing campaign for the team led by Mitchell Marsh.

Match 4: New Zealand vs Afghanistan

New Zealand kicked off their T20 World Cup journey in 2026, determined to shake off the ghosts of 2024. After a disappointing campaign that saw them upset by Afghanistan, they came together as a team to make things right this time around.

Facing a challenging target of 183 on a Chennai pitch that typically favors spinners, the Kiwis faced an early setback with Mujeeb-ur-Rahman striking twice in quick succession, dismissing Finn Allen and Rachin Ravindra. However, Glenn Phillips and Tim Seifert steadied the innings, and with some late fireworks from Daryl Mitchell, Mark Chapman, and Mitchell Santner, they comfortably crossed the finish line in just 17.5 overs.
