Kumar Sanu on Back Defamation Case Against Ex-Wife: Famous singer of the 90s, Kumar Sanu was having a dispute with his ex-wife Rita Bhattacharya for a long time. This matter became more heated when Rita started giving interviews against Kumar. For this reason, Kumar Sanu had filed a defamation case of Rs 50 crore against him in the Bombay High Court. After which Singer has now said that if Rita Bhattacharya apologizes in public then he can withdraw the case.
What is the history of the dispute?
Kumar Sanu and Rita Bhattacharya had a love marriage in the 80s. Both of them had this marriage in Kolkata without the consent of their parents. When Sanu got married to Rita, he was trying to make his place in Bollywood. From this marriage he had three children, Jiko, Jassi and Jaan Kumar. However, this relationship could not last long and they both separated after 8 years. After this, in an interview, Rita accused Sanu of extra marital affair. He said that he was having an affair with Bollywood actress Kunika Sadanand.
Behavior changed after the success of Aashiqui
In an interview, Rita claimed that after the success of the superhit film Aashiqui, there was a lot of change in her behavior. Apart from this, she alleged that Sanu and her family kept her hungry during her pregnancy, they used to lock the kitchen so that she could not eat anything. He also yearned for basic needs.
Legally separated in 2001
Due to increasing distance in the relationship, Rita had decided to live separately from Sanu in 1994 after 8 years of marriage, but she also took some time to somehow improve the relationship. But it was of no use and both got legally divorced in 2001. It was also settled that both of them will not make any public allegations against each other in future. But a few months ago, at the end of 2025, Rita made several serious allegations that Sanu’s family used to torture her.
Rs 50 crore case after allegations
Kumar Sanu had filed a defamation case of Rs 50 crore against Rita, accusing her of tarnishing his image. After which the Bombay High Court issued a ‘Gag Order’ against Rita, that is, she was forbidden from making public statements against Sanu. After this, on February 18, the court advised both the parties to end this dispute. Also suggested to prepare a draft, so that the defamation case of Rs 50 crore can be withdrawn.
Will withdraw the case only if you apologize publicly
Kumar Sanu’s lawyer Raees Khan said that we respect the suggestion of the court. But the matter is not between Sanu and Rita because the way Rita has accused her daughters is tarnishing her image. This matter is no longer personal. Therefore, Kumar Sanu will withdraw the defamation case on the only condition that Rita Bhattacharya apologizes in public.
