Home favourite Oscar Piastri will not start the Australian Grand Prix after crashing his McLaren car on the reconnaissance lap at Albert Park Circuit.
The incident occurred on the lap to the grid before the race start. As Piastri exited Turn 4, he reportedly ran wide over the kerb, which unsettled the car and caused it to snap into a spin before hitting the barriers on the left side of the track.
The crash caused significant damage, particularly to the front-right wheel and suspension, leaving the McLaren unable to continue. As a result, the Australian driver was forced to retire before even taking his place on the starting grid.
Piastri climbed out of the car immediately after the incident and was reported to be uninjuredeasing concerns for the driver following the impact.
The moment came as a major disappointment for local fans in Melbourne, as Piastri had qualified strongly and was expected to start around the top five on the grid.
The early exit also adds another chapter to the long-standing run of Australian drivers failing to win their home race at Albert Park.
