History was created as the Indian team successfully defended their crown and lifted the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 trophy on home soil, defeating the New Zealand  by a massive 96-run margin in a one-sided final. With the victory, India became the first team to defend a T20 World Cup title, the first to win the tournament at home, and the first side to claim three T20 World Cup trophies.

After winning the toss, New Zealand opted to chase, a strategy that had worked for them in the semifinal. However, the decision quickly backfired as India’s openers came out with an explosive approach.

Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma provided a blistering start, adding 92 runs in the powerplay and putting the Kiwi bowlers under immense pressure. Abhishek played a fearless knock of 52 off just 21 balls, smashing six fours and three sixes to set the tone for the final.

After his dismissal, Ishan Kishan continued the assault, building a 105-run partnership with Samson. Kishan hammered 54 off 25 balls with four fours and four sixes, while Samson registered his third consecutive half-century of the tournament, once again delivering on the biggest stage.

Although Jimmy Neesham briefly pulled things back with three wickets in an over, Shivam Dube provided a late flourish, blasting 26 off just eight balls. India finished with a formidable total of 255.

In reply, New Zealand’s chase never gathered momentum. Early strikes removed Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra, and Glenn Phillips inside the powerplay, leaving the scoreboard at 52/3 and effectively ending the contest.

Led by a brilliant spell from Jasprit Bumrah, who took four wickets, and strong support from Axar Patel with three, India bowled New Zealand out for 159 to seal a commanding victory and a historic title defense.

India not only lifted the trophy but also created history by becoming the first team to defend the T20 World Cup title, the first team to win the tournament on home soil, and the first side to win the title three times in the history of the competition.
