There is a big controversy these days in the world of Artificial Intelligence. The conflict between American AI company Anthropic and America’s Defense Department Pentagon has come to the fore. The Pentagon has declared the company a “supply chain risk” to national security. After this decision, Anthropic has announced to challenge it in the court, calling it wrong. Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also commented on this controversy and said that no private company can be bigger than the government.
On March 4, the US Department of Defense sent an official letter to Anthropic. It said that the company is being seen as a potential threat to American national security. If this decision remains in effect, all US defense contractors may have to end their business relationships with Anthropic. Usually the US government gives this kind of status to foreign companies, especially those companies on which questions are raised regarding security. Earlier, a similar step was taken in the case of Chinese tech company Huawei. Therefore, including an American company in this list is considered unusual.
Company preparing to go to court
Anthropic has called this decision of the Pentagon unfair. The company says that this step is not legally correct. For this reason he has decided to go to court and challenge this decision. The company’s CEO Dario Amodei has assured its users that this dispute will not have any impact on ordinary customers. According to him, this ban will apply only to those services which are directly to the contract of the US Defense Department.
what is the root of the dispute
According to the report, the Pentagon wanted Anthropic to give some relaxation on the use of its AI system and allow the government to use it widely. But the company refused to accept this condition. Anthropic feared that its AI tools could be used for mass surveillance or to create autonomous weapons. For this reason, the company did not accept the Pentagon’s demands, after which this controversy came to light.
Comment by Sam Altman
Amidst this whole matter, OpenAI head Sam Altman also reacted. At Morgan Stanley’s Technology, Media and Telecom Conference, he said that the government should have more authority than private companies. His comment is being considered as an indirect comment on Anthropic chief Dario Amodei.
Controversy also arose regarding Trump funding
After Anthropic’s contract with the Pentagon ended, OpenAI signed an agreement with the US Defense Department. After this, news came out that Amodei had said in a message sent to his employees that OpenAI got this opportunity because some of its leaders had given political donations to Donald Trump’s election campaign last year.
According to reports, OpenAI President Greg Brockman and his wife donated approximately $25 million to Trump’s super PAC. Responding to this, Sam Altman said that if a company keeps distance from the democratic process just because it has objections to the people in power, then it is not good for the society.
OpenAI’s side
Altman also said that OpenAI signed the agreement with the Pentagon so that the situation would not get worse. According to him, the situation was deteriorating rapidly at that time and it was necessary to reduce tension. However, he later admitted that some people felt that the company was taking a hasty decision regarding this agreement. For this reason, some conditions of the agreement were later changed.
User Feedback
After the agreement with the Pentagon, OpenAI faced a lot of criticism online. Many users began removing ChatGPT from their phones and computers in protest. According to reports, the number of uninstallations of ChatGPT increased by almost 300 percent. On the other hand, a large number of people shifted towards Anthropic’s cloud chatbot.
Due to the sudden increase in traffic on Anthropic’s platform, its cloud system also faced outage twice. Company chief Amodei says that not accepting the Pentagon’s conditions has strengthened the company’s image in the eyes of the public and many people are considering it a courageous step.
